Warhammer Wednesday: Inferno!
Almost two months ago, I posted that Black Library's short story anthology Inferno! was coming back, as both a new book and as classic reprints of the original magazines from back in the day. Well the opportunity was too good to miss, so I indulged.
The print quality isn't quite as good as the original magazines, but that's down to them being print on demand rather than printed using traditional repro techniques, but most of the artwork still holds up. And flicking through those first five magazines, I realised I had forgotten quite how much I contributed in those early days.
The reprints of the old mags are no longer available from Black Library, but the new paperback anthology format is, with Inferno! #2 coming in January 2019.

"There are also these marvellous things called Beta readers – a friend who does have direct experience, can offer invaluable insight. And that means, if you’re a man wanting to write a credible female PoV, for example, you don’t make the classic cock-ups.
So to speak."

Scrooge and Marley (Deceased): The Haunted Man
Available in time for Christmas, from Green Man Books, is the traditional seasonal ghost story Scrooge and Marley (Deceased): The Haunted Man.
“I come this night to ask for your help, Ebenezer,” the ghost said.
A year on from the events of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge finds himself visited once again by the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley, who brings with him a new proposition. Just as Marley helped Scrooge to avoid the cruel fate that the last of the Three Spirits foretold, Marley wants Scrooge to help him reduce his time in Purgatory.
And so begins an epic adventure that will see the former friends face off against all manner of phantasms, freaks and fiends, with only one thing at stake… Everything!
"An entertaining, well-written sequel to 'A Christmas Carol' with plenty of fun twists."

Gamebook Friday: ACE Gamebooks at Dragonmeet 2018
Three weeks tomorrow, on Saturday 1st December, I will be at Dragonmeet 2018, with my ACE Gamebooks - Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland and The Wicked Wizard of Oz.
I was hoping to have NEVERLAND - Here Be Monsters! on sale too, but unfortunately it wasn't to be, as resident dinosaur wrangler Kev Crossley is still busy wrangling the dinosaurs. However, I may get some of his completed illustrations printed up and have them on display on my stand, to show people what they can expect from the new adventure.
And here's one of them, to keep you going for now.

Happy Birthday, Bram Stoker!
If he had still been alive, today would have been Bram Stoker's 171st birthday.
Arguably, it was the Irish author's gothic novel Dracula that made the vampire the horror icon it is today, and blood-suckers have certainly cropped up in works of mine from time to time over the years, including in Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland.
But I have never referenced the novel quite so directly as I will be in a project I plan to be working on next year...

"Of all the pieces of advice dealt out to aspiring authors, the one I hate most is, 'Write what you know.' It seems anti-ethical to the creative impulse. Instead, write what you love. Write what excites you. And if you don't know something essential, look it up. Have fun learning... Write with authenticity. Write the truth as you see it. Or write to find the truth."

Gamebook Friday: Beasts, Wolves and Cheshire Cats
I have three pieces of gamebook-related news for you this week.
First of all, in case you haven't already heard, Beowulf Beastslayer funded on Wednesday, finally raising 136% of its original funding goal, meaning that two Stretch Goals were unlocked. If you didn't back the Kickstarter, look out for Beowulf Beastslayer in all good online retailers' webstores around this time next year.
Secondly, I was recently sent a copy of a fan-produced translation of my fifth Fighting Fantasy gamebook Howl of the Werewolf, and a very impressive piece of work it is too.
And last of all, copies of the German language edition of Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland arrived from Poland this week, for me to sign for those people who missed out on getting hold of a copy at the Frankfurt Book Fair - and there's quite a lot of them!
Until next time...
