Alice's Day 2022

It's three years since I attended Alice's Day in Oxford as a guest of the Lewis Carroll Society.

Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland was the first ACE Gamebook, written before ACE Gamebooks were even thing, and it is still a popular seller. It regularly sells out at the UK Games Expo, and did so again this year. And even though it was first published in the UK almost seven years ago, new foreign language editions keep appearing.

If you've yet to experience my gamification of Lewis Carroll's seminal children's book, you can pick up a copy here. Just remember... we're all mad here!

Happy Birthday, Lewis Carroll!

Today marks what would have been Lewis Carroll's 190th birthday. Of course, it was his work that inspired Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland, which is still my most popular ACE Gamebook. So from today, until the end of the month, you can pick it up for a knockdown price on DriveThruRPG, and there are still a few physical paperbacks available on eBay that are going for what is, quite frankly, a steal.

So, if you haven't got yourself a copy yet, don't delay and do so today. And don't forget to join Babel_17 on Twitch, every Monday evening from 9:30pm, when Julian will be playing through Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland live!

Gamebook Friday: Sir John Tenniel's 200th Birthday

As Google informed me this morning, today would have been Sir John Tenniel's 200th birthday, if he were still alive*.

Sir John Tenniel was, of course, the original illustrator of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, And What Alice Found There.

Artist Kev Crossley created his own homage to Tenniel when he drew Alice's encounter with the Cheshire Cat for Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland, and which ended up being used on the cover of the first ACE Gamebook.

Well now you can also have Kev's awesome artwork adorning your wardrobe. Simply click the image below and shop 'til you drop.

* Which, let's face it, would be pretty impressive.

The Kickstarter's halfway through, so what are you going to do?

JABBERWACKY

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Now back the Kickstarter, my son!
Beware of missing out, and shun
Mere trifles – don’t think twice!”

He took his credit card in hand:
Long time the right reward he sought –
So rested he, on Tweedledee,
“An eBook’s fine,” he thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

“You want a hardback,” quoth the beast,
And while you’re there, I do declare,
A signed one’s not too costly.”

One two! One two! And through and through
The frantic mouse went click-‘n’-clack!
He used his smarts – picked Queen of Hearts –
And went galumphing back.

“And hast thou backed the Kickstarter?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
Oh frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

‘Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble on the knoll.

Gamebook Friday: Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland

In case you couldn't tell from the change to this blog's wallpaper and the new banner heading, I'm gearing up to launch my newest Kickstarter project, Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland.

It's a gamebook (very much in the style of Fighting Fantasy and Choose Your Own Adventure), it's a little bit Steampunk, a little bit horror, and a whole lot of Lewis Carroll's iconic characters given the JG treatment. What more do you need to know?

Please join the Facebook group for the book and watch this space for more news, coming soon... Oh, and tell all your friends (and your enemies too). :-)
