Gamebook Friday: Dracula Anniversary Hardback

As of writing, the Kickstarter campaign for the 5th Anniversary Hardback of the ACE Gamebook Dracula: Curse of the Vampire, has just 6 days left to run, but is already 56% funded.

There is now a no frills hardback reward available for £50. So, if you've been holding back from backing the Kickstarter, maybe this option is for you.

If you haven't backed the project yet yourself, here's a reminder of what you will be getting:

  A hardback of the 1,000 section adventure, in which you can play as either Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray, Dr John Seward, or Count Dracula. This will differ from the original hardback in that the cover will be red with black printing on it.
• Known errata will be corrected in this new edition and backers of the Kickstarter will have their names featured inside.

Dracula: Curse of the Vampire 5th Anniversary Hardback funding on Kickstarter now!

The Kickstarter campaign to fund a 5th anniversary edition of the hardback of Dracula: Curse of the Vampire is now live!

There are only two rewards on offer - one comes with one 5th anniversary collector's hardback and the other includes two 5th anniversary collector's hardbacks (perfect if you are looking for a gift for somebody else, or an investment for yourself).

Each hardback comes with a collectible bookmark, a pack of 10 postcards featuring Hauke Kock's artwork from the book, a pair of Dracula: Curse of the Vampire themed black dice, and Dracula's crest in the form of a gold-plated pin badge. Gamebook Friday - Dracula: Curse of the Vampire

The Kickstarter campaign to fund a 5th anniversary edition of the hardback of Dracula: Curse of the Vampire, including the bonus chapter brimming with desginer's notes and artist's sketches, launches on Tuesday 3 March 2026, at 1pm GMT.

First published back in 2021, Dracula: Curse of the Vampire reimagines Bram Stoker's classic as an interactive adventure. YOU play as one of three Vampire-Hunters - Jonathan Harker, Mina Murray, and Dr John Seward - or even as the eponymous Count himself.

At 1,000 sections, it is the longest gamebook I have written to date and is illustrated throughout by Hauke Kock.

While the book is still availble in paperback and as an ebook, the hardback has been out of print for a while. So, to mark the 5th anniversary of the publication of Dracula: Curse of the Vampire, I am running the forthcoming Kickstarter. Where the original hardback featured a black cover with red lettering, the new edition will have a red cover with black lettering.

Gamebook Friday: 5th Anniversary Hardbacks on sale now!

Incredibly, 2024 marks the 5th anniversary of the publication of both Beowulf Beastslayer and 'TWAS - The Krampus Night Before Christmas. The hardbacks of these books have been out of print for a while, so to mark the occasion, new editions have been published. They have green covers (rather than red) and other modifications, making them ideal for collectors and fans of beautiful gamebooks as well.

In the case of Beowulf Beastslayer, the endpapers feature Rian Magee's map of Midgard that he created for the Heorot RPG, and in the case of 'TWAS, Tony Hough's full-page illustrations are now in colour, rather than greyscale.

Gamebook Friday: Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland 5th anniversary hardback

These have arrived, and will be winging their way to backers of the Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland 5th anniversary Kickstarter very soon...

As you can see, the new edition* matches the other ACE Gamebooks hardbacks.

* Which is actually the 6th English edition, to date.

Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland 5th Anniversary Hardback

There are just two weeks to go for the Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland 5th Anniversary Hardback on Kickstarter and, as of writing, there are only 30 of the 100 rewards left.

We are also just £200 away from hitting the £3,000 Stretch Goal, which, if achieved, will mean that the new edition of Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland will include a brand new map of Wonderland, drawn by the book's original artist, Kev Crossley.

Gamebook Friday: Something to Celebrate

Here in the UK it's Brexit Day... but despite that, there's still something to celebrate today, and that is that the 5th anniversary collector's hardback of Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland is currently funding on Kickstarter. Not only that, but it has already funded!

When I originally crowdfunded and published the gamebook with Snowbooks back in 2015, I hadn't even considered turning the concept of re-imagining classics of literature as works of interactive fiction into a series. Since that time, of course, the series has developed, and has developed a particular look. But it has always bothered me that the cloth-bound, gold-embossed hardback produced for the original Kickstarter doesn't match the other ACE Gamebook special editions.

To rectify that, I am running a Kickstarter to fund production of a new collector's hardback, with a brand new cover design, that will match the dimensions of the other titles in the ACE Gamebooks series. And this is what it's going to look like.

There is only one reward on offer, and there are only 100 available. Once they're gone, they're gone!

Each collector's hardback will be individually numbered and signed, and will come with a special Queen Alice bookmark, on which you can record your game stats. Also, everyone who backs the Kickstarter will have their name appear in the Acknowledgements at the back of the book. There are stretch goals planned too.
