Gamebook Friday: The Art of ACE Gamebooks (Volume 1)

The Art of ACE Gamebooks: Volume 1 is a large format book showcasing artwork from the first 10 years of ACE Gamebooks.

Written by the series' creator and gamebook legend Jonathan Green, the book features the artwork of ace illustrators Kev Crossley, Neil Googe, Hauke Kock, Tony Hough, Heraldo Mussolini, and the late, great Russ Nicholson.

If you would like to support this project by making a donation, and be credited at the front of the book, please click the button below.

Please note, by donating you are NOT purchasing a copy of the book. The only reward you will receive is to see you name printed in the book as a supporter. However, any and all support is much appreciated and very gratefully received.

The finished book will be a full-colour, 250+ pages, A4 softback, and will be available from all good online retailers.

Don't delay - you only have until Monday 12th October 2026 to pledge your support.

Gamebook Friday: ACE Gamebooks at the Frankfurt Book Fair

Next weekend, I will be at the Frankfurt Book Fair, with the German publisher of my ACE Gamebooks series, Mantikore-Verlag.

For the occasion, the German language edition of The Wicked Wizard of Oz has been reprinted with a new cover. The publisher is clearly hoping to appeal to the Wicked fanbase, which is fine by me.

The new German cover.

The original German cover.

The original English cover.

I had a great time at the Frankfurt Book Fair back in 2018, where Alice im Düsterland was being promoted, and I spent two hours signing books for devoted Alice fans.

Don't forget - next year I will be publishing a 10th annviersary hardback of The Wicked Wizard of Oz. So, watch this space for more details...

The Tides of Innsmouth - Live Playthrough tonight!

Join your host Ken Boyter tonight on Twitch for a live playthrough of my second Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebook The Tides of Innsmouth.

The decaying town of Innsmouth is awash with sightings of a mysterious sunken pirate junk near the treacherous Devil Reef. Those rumours are an irresistible lure, drawing the Investigators of Arkham to the fog-laden Massachusetts town. But the thrill of discovery quickly wanes when you are faced with hostile locals, a missing marine archaeologist, and a family curse with tendrils that haunt your waking days.

Solve the riddles, overcome tests, and wish for luck as you navigate the rotten streets of the decrepit town and beyond to save the world as you know it.

Gamebook Friday: Dracula - Battesimo di Sangue

I am delighted to report that the Italian language edition of Dracula: Curse of the Vampire is now available for pre-order.

The book's title has had a slight change. Dracula: Battesimo di Sangue translates as Dracula: Baptism of Blood, which is what the French language version is called too.

There are two versions of the cover. The collector's edition, featuring the same cover art as the English edition, by Hauke Kock, and the standard one, which has a brand new piece of art produced by Francesco Crisci*, which is absolutely phenomenal.

I must offer Francesco and the team at Raven Distribution a huge thank you for allowing me to share the new cover art with you here, in full, and without any obscuring text.

So, don't delay and order yours now!

For anyone waiting on the Spanish language edition of Dracula: Curse of the Vampire, I believe it will be published next month.

In other news, the latest episode of ACE Gamebooks: The Gamebook Podcast is out now.

* Who also painted a new cover for the Italian version of Neverland: Here Be Monsters!

ACE Gamebooks: The Gamebook Podcast - Fighting Fantasy Fest 6

It probably hasn't escaped your notice that last Saturday, 5th September 2026, Fighting Fantasy Fest 6 took place at the University of West London in Ealing.

I was there with my new mic wand, courtesy of Hoobynoo, and my cameraperson, and so set about recording some material for the second ACE Gamebooks: The Gamebook Podcast podcast. And you can watch it right here...

We had a few of the FFF6 collectibles left over after the event. So, if you would like a pair of gold FF dice, a copy of the programme, some beermats, or even a City Guard T-shirt, follow this link.

Happy Birthday to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!

L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was first published on 1st September 1900 - precisely 126 years ago today!

In 2017, I published the second ACE Gamebook, The Wicked Wizard of Oz. Whilst still available in paperback, the hardback had been out of print for some time.

Next year, to mark 10 years since the book first came out, I am going to be running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of a brand new hardback edition. So, watch this space for more details!

I was recently interviewed for the RPG Blokes Podcast, about all things Fighting Fantasy and gamebooks in general, including my own ACE Gamebooks series.

You can listen to the podcast here, or watch it via YouTube.

Thank you very much to Stephen, Mark and Jon, for having me on their podcast, and if you would like to interview me for your channel, drop me a line at info@jonathangreenauthor.com.

Cthulhu Thursday: Happy Birthday, H P Lovecraft!

Today would have been H P Lovecraft's 136th birthday. An ever-increasing number of my books have been inspired - either directly, or indirectly - by Mr Lovecraft's cosmic horror creations.

Among the most recently published are the ACE Gamebook adventure Shakespeare Vs. Cthulhu: What Dreams May Come, and the Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebooks published by Aconyte Books.

In fact, purely by chance, today I am writing a pitch for another Lovecraftian gamebook. You will have to continue to follow this blog to find out if it graduates beyond just a pitch.

Gamebook Friday: One month left to back 100 AKER WOOD on Kickstarter!

If you have yet to pledge your support to the 100 AKER WOOD ACE Gamebooks Kickstarter, you have until Monday 7th September 2026 to do so. After that date, Late Pledges will close as the book goes to layout.

Heraldo Mussolini has completed the illustrations for the book, and I have been tinkering with the cover for the paperback. Having thought I would take it one way, this morning I tried something different, and I'm really pleased with it. I think it could work...

That said, nothing is set in stone at this time so, it may well change before 100 AKER WOOD goes to print.

Just make sure you don't miss out on the chance to be part of the Kicktstarter and receive some exclusive rewards that won't be available to people who buy the gamebook later through retail.

Gamebook Friday: Beowulf Beastslayer is sailing to Hungary!

The Hungarian language edition of Beowulf Beastslayer - or Rémölő Beowulf - is out at the end of August from Chameleon Comix, but it is available for pre-order now!

King Hrothgar’s great golden mead-hall, Heorot, lies under a curse; after sunset, the mirth-hating night-stalker Grendel comes to the hall to maim and murder! None are capable of killing the monster, though many have tried, until one day, Beowulf and his company of Geatish warriors cross the sail-road and land on Danish shores...

Beowulf Beastslayer is a gateway to the mythic world of the Scandinavian sagas. Once inside its pages, you will find yourself travelling to Heorot to embark upon a thrilling epic quest of your own.

Beowulf Beastslayer is a brand new take on the Anglo-Saxon epic, re-imagining the events described in the poem as an adventure gamebook. YOU decide which route to take, which perils to risk, and which of the strange creatures you will meet along the way to fight. But whether you survive your quest and rise to the level of lauded hero - and maybe even king - or succumb to the likes of the monster Grendel and his sea-hag mother, will be down to the choices YOU make.

Will you follow the course of events as laid down by the scops and skalds of old – battling the fiend Grendel, his dam, and the fire-tongued dragon – or will you choose a different path and forge your own legend?

Gamebook Friday: The Kingsport Metamorphosis - Rave Reviews!

The Kingsport Metamorphosis, my third Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebook, has been out for over five months now, but I only came across these reviews the other day.

The Witty and Sarcastic Bookclub loved it:

"I’m pretty sure I say this every time, but this might be my favorite Investigators Gamebook to date."

And here's what they had to say about the series in general:

"I truly love the Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebooks. Part Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, part table-top roleplaying game, these books are just flat-out fun. The Kingsport Metamorphosis continues in this vein, bringing hours of entertainment and tons of creativity."

And here's what Luna Gauthier had to say over on Cosmic Circus:

"I would definitely say that I returned to this one more times than any of the other Investigators Gamebooks that I’ve read so far. The re-readability makes The Kingsport Metamorphosis the best installment of the Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebooks to date and worth picking up."

You can purchase your copy of The Kingsport Metamorphosis here.

Gamebook Friday: Gamebooks Update

I have just updated the Gamebooks page on my blog. It hadn't been updated since December 2018, at which time I had only had 20 gamebooks published. The total currently stands at 30, with two more already written and waiting to be published.

There are so many ACE Gamebooks now* that I am considering producing a leaflet for events to give out to people, with summaries of what each one is about, unusual rules, and total number of sections.

I have so far written gamebooks for 12 different series or IPs, but the three that are currently on the writing desk, as it were, are...

ACE Gamebooks

Classic works of literature or well-known legends reimagined with a gamebook twist. To find out more, click the image below.

Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebooks

Interactive adventures set within the Arkham Horror universe of the 1920s, inspired by the cosmic insanity of H P Lovecraft. To find out more, click the image below.

A news series set within the Dystopian Age setting of Warcralde Studios' games. Expect James Bond-esque derring-do within a souped up late 19th century. The first book in the series is called Valiant. To find out more, click the cover image below.

* I am currently writing the tenth.

The original Globe Theatre burned down 413 years ago today!

The original Globe Theatre burned down on this day, 29 June, in1613, during a performance of Shakespeare's All is True - a.k.a. Henry VIII.

A theatrical cannon fired during the play ignited the wooden structure's thatched roof, and the resulting conflagration destroyed the building in less than an hour. Incredibly, no one was killed. The theatre was subsequently rebuilt in 1614.

Shakespeare Vs. Cthulhu: What Dreams May Come tells a different story, however...

Shakespeare Vs. Cthulhu: What Dreams May Come is dedicated to Master Scott Lewis and Mistress Claire Byard - two good friends who have helped me out at various events over the years, but mainly the UK Games Expo.

When I made the dedication, I had no idea that Scott's birthday happens to be 29 June. It's almost as if it was written in the stars... by a big, nasty gribbly called Cthulhu!
