Happy Birthday, Mr Stoker!

Today, Monday 8th November 2021, would have been Bram Stoker's 174th birthday, if he had still been alive - or undead!

You may not realise that Dracula - Curse of the Vampire actually uses elements from three of Stoker's works: his seminal horror novel Dracula; the short story Dracula's Guest, which was published posthumously; and the last novel to be published before his death, The Lair of the White Worm.

If you want to find out more about the source material for the sixth ACE Gamebook, and learn how Bram Stoker set about writing Dracula in the first place, then you want to pick up a hardback copy of Dracula - Curse of the Vampire, which includes a bonus chapter that discusses all of the above.

Many people have been enjoying Dracula - Curse of the Vampire, and here are just some of the reviews that have come in so far.

If you have also read and enjoyed Dracula - Curse of the Vampire, I would ask that you post a review on Amazon, and Goodreads, and anywhere else you can. Quite simply, the more reviews, the greater the exposure. The greater the exposure, the more sales. And considering I spent the best part of two years writing the book, I could really do with some good sales right now.

Gamebook Friday: 10 Years of Night of the Necromancer

It dawned on me the other day that Night of the Necromancer, the last of the seven Fighting Fantasy gamebooks I have written to date, will be ten years old this year!

When I came to propose the idea to Wizard Books back in 2009, I couldn't quite believe that no one had suggested writing an FF adventure that started off with the hero being murdered and then coming back as a ghost before. I had great fun developing that aspect of the game, giving the reader all manner of spectral powers that sometimes worked to their advantage, but sometimes didn't.

One of the things I particularly loved about the process of writing the book was knowing that it was going to be illustrated by Martin McKenna. Martin was a favourite FF artist of mine, ever since I saw his work in Daggers of Darkness*, and I had been fortunate to have him also illustrate both Curse of the Mummy and Howl of the Werewolf.

Martin and I clearly had exposure to similar genre influences growing up and he just seems to get where I'm coming from, which means that when we collaborate, text and art mesh very nicely together. It is for this reason that I am delighted Martin agreed to illustrate the forthcoming Dracula - Curse of the Vampire.

Many of Martin's illustrations for Night of the Necromancer - including such personal favourites as the Sea Demon, the Hellfire Golem, and the Shadow King - are available to buy as prints from ArtPal.

The Sea Demon.

 The Hellfire Golem.

The Shadow King.

* Produced when he was only 17 years old!

Gamebook Friday: The darkest, most chilling Fighting Fantasy book yet!

That's what one reviewer had to say about my last Fighting Fantasy gamebook Night of the Necromancer:

"This book is probably the best Fighting Fantasy book since Vault of the Vampire. If you like dark eerie, mysterious and atmospheric gamebooks of this series, and you thought Vault of the Vampire was good, then you will definitely enjoy this book, it may be your favourite yet.

"Other ones you may prefer to read are Dead of Night, Night Dragon, Eye of the Dragon, Revenge of the Vampire, and Howl of the Werewolf.

"This maybe the best gamebook yet, alongside the much overlooked Knights of Doom and SpellbreakerSpellbreaker had the best story line and challenges and this is up there with that one.

"It seems Jonathan Green has a real talent for these books, being one of the younger writers to the series... Definitely take the time to give this a read."

Night of the Necromancer is still available through Amazon.

Warhammer Wednesday: Still available to buy

I've not had anything out with the Black Library for quite a while, but three of my novels are still available to buy in eBook format.

So if Space Marines are your thing, why not check out Iron Hands? Or if you prefer your action to be old school and Old World, you can download both Magestorm (awesome wizard on wizard action) and The Dead and the Damned (my first novel).

Zombie Monday: Nazi Zombie Army - Götterdämmerung

I don't know about you, but I often feel like a zombie on a Monday. Anyway, on to the point of this post...

This week, it's all about the zombies for me, so to help get me in the mood I had a look at what people have been saying about my last zombie short story - Nazi Zombie Army: Götterdämmerung - since it was published back in February.

"So atmospheric I could smell it! Jonathan Green points his pen at the Zombie genre and delivers a satisfying romp through the foetid hordes of undead. It is a short story but it is laced with imagery and action aplenty. Two mouldering thumbs up!" (4 stars)

"I love good zombie films and war films so had to read this. Short story and straight into the action with the small sniper group outnumbered by Germans forced to take to the sewers." (3 stars)

"If you want to while away the time with an easy enjoyable read, then this is one book to fit that bill. The author writes well and is descriptive... It was a short read but well worth it." (5 stars)

"I thought that the book was cool because it was about Nazi zombies at war. My favourite part is when the zombies get killed by a giant tank." (4 stars)

You can download a copy of Nazi Zombie Army: Götterdämmerung here, and keep an eye out for more tales of the undead coming from the rotten pen of Jonathan Green, Author in 2014.

And the dead shall rise...

Ten months ago todayShadows Over Sylvania was released upon an unsuspecting and unknowing public. It seems to have slipped under the radar since then, but it remains one of my favourite gamebooks (of those that I've written).

In case you don't already know, and you're new to this blog, in Shadows Over Sylvania you take on the role of a Vampire thrall of one of the bloodthirsty rulers of the accursed county of Sylvania. Your adventure takes place in the years following Count Vlad von Carstein’s failed attempt to become the first vampire Emperor. There are no Colleges of Magic, Konrad von Carstein is yet to seize control of the realm, and the legendary battles of Grim Moor and Hel Fenn have yet to happen.

Throughout the adventure you will be forced to battle numerous enemies who would stand against you, both mortal and Undead. You will also come across weapons and other useful items that may help you progress in your adventure. And then there are the difficult decisions that you will be forced to make which could well have a direct impact on how events play out later in the story.

Here's what fans have had to say about the book so far:

"Jonathan has done a great job of bringing the Warhammer World to life in a new and totally unexpected way."

"The adventure kept my interest throughout the story and the narrative was engaging and interesting to the end."

"I just can't stop playing through this adventure, there are so many twists and turns and the different bloodlines adds a interesting new aspect to the story as well as the allies system which adds a totally new layer to the game."

"Overall, this is a fantastic game book that I have revisited many times and undoubtedly will again."

"9/10 - A great game book with enough options and interesting story line to mean it is revisited many times."

"Easily 10/10, I hope there are many more to come."

There has never been a better time to pick up a copy of Shadows Over Sylvania from the Black Library since they are currently offering FREE SHIPPPING on all orders placed before Christmas.

Zombie Thursday

A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Zombies are even better.

Warhammer Wednesday: Necromancer

I can't quite believe that Necromancer, my third Warhammer novel, came out over eight years ago! It's not been re-issued yet as a Print on Demand title, nor as an eBook, but there are still people who are coming across this tome for the first time, and loving it.

This novel is very different from the typical Warhammer novel. Instead of the more typical action-driven story, this novel is a character study and provides a fascinating look at how an ordinary young man raised in the Empire becomes corrupted by darkness.

The entire novel is told from the point of view of the main character, Dieter Heydrich and covers only a brief period of his life (how he became a Necromancer, but really nothing about him after that point).

Every step on his path of damnation is made with logical and seemingly good (or at least understandable) reasons. The reasons and rationalisations he makes along the way make him a tragic and flawed, but entirely human character.

If you are looking for an action-packed Warhammer novel, this book is not for you. If you want a chance to get some insight into the bad guys of the Warhammer world, this book is an excellent choice.

5 stars!
