Gamebook Friday: Review of the Year - 2023

2023 has been a busy year, for various reasons, in no small part because we moved house - again! - although hopefully we are now settled for the foreseeable. Another reason is because we got a dog.

His name is Conker and he's a one year-old Cavapoo.

I have never owned a dog before and wasn't particularly keen on getting one. However, my son found an apt meme online that goes along the lines of, 'There is no love like that between a grumpy, middle-aged man and the pet he said he didn't want.'

Therefore, this year will probably go down in my memory as the Year of the Dog, but in terms of writing, it has definitely been the Year of Aconyte Books. I started 2023 by writing my first Marvel gamebook for Aconyte - Moon Knight: Age of Anubis - and I've ended it putting the finishing touches to my first Arkham Horror gamebook, The Darkness Over Arkham.

I have only actually had two books published in the UK this year - the aforementioned Moon Knight: Age of Anubis and the second ACE Gamebooks Roleplay RPG Heorot - but I've actually written five. However, eight different overseas editions of my ACE Gamebooks have been published this year and three of my Fighting Fantasy gamebooks.

Sadly, this year, we lost Russ Nicholson, whose illustrations for The Warlock of Firetop Mountain helped set me on the path to becoming a gamebook author, and with whom I am immensely proud to have collaborated on the fourth ACE Gamebook Beowulf Beastslayer.

Russ's illustrations also appear in the Heorot RPG.

In 2023 I attended the UK Games Expo and Dragonmeet, as usual, and a couple of events local to me here in Taunton. I will certainly be attending the UK Games Expo again in 2024 but also hope to visit some other events outside of the UK.

I have plenty of writing plans for 2024 as well, including launching the Kickstarter campaign for the next ACE Gamebook, Shakespeare Vs. Cthulhu: What Dreams May Come.

But first, I need to put several projects to bed, not least of which is YOU ARE THE HERO: An Interactive History of Fighting Fantasy GamebooksYOU ARE THE HERO will be published later this year, as will Magic Realms: The Art of Fighting Fantasy.

And we also have Fighting Fantasy Fest 5 to look forward to in 2024.

Before I go, if you haven't signed up to my author newsletter, you can do so here, and I'll see you again in the New Year!

Gamebook Friday: ACE, Box, Anubis, and Shakespeare

We're just two and a half weeks away from Christmas and I, for one, haven't started my Christmas shopping yet.

If you have yet to do your Christmas shopping, have you considered buying someone on your present list a digital ACE Gamebooks or ACE Gamebooks Roleplay product this year?

Right now I have a sale on over on DriveThruRPG. You can buy a complete RPG - 'TWAS, one of its supplements, or Heorot - for just £5, while my ACE Gamebooks are just £2 each.

I am also currently running a crowdfunding campaign, over on Gamefound, to pay for more of Tony Hough's amazing artwork for The Box of Delights - The Roleplaying Game

But if you're looking for a physical gift to pop in someone's stocking, or put under the tree, how about my new Marvel: Multiverse Missions gamebook Moon Knight: Age of Anubis?

Looking ahead to the New Year, in 2024 I will be crowdfunding the eighth ACE Gamebook, Shakespeare Vs. Cthulhu: What Dreams May Come. To sign up to be notified of developments, follow this link.

I'm pleased to say that it is currently in the Top 100 Best Sellers in Movie Tie-In Fiction on Amazon.com and has received a number of pleasing reviews. Here are just some of them.

Tie-in Tuesday - Moon Knight: Age of Anubis

In case you haven't been following my Twitter and Facebook feeds, Moon Knight: Age of Anubis, my first Marvel gamebook, is published in the US today in paperback today, and around the work as a global ebook! Several reviewers have read it already, and the good news is they like it.

Here's what the Witty and Sarcastic Bookclub have to say about the book:

"I know less than nothing about Moon Knight and am about five movies behind in the MC Universe, but thankfully it didn’t matter one iota. I have a massive amount of nostalgia-laden affection for adventure gamebooks anyway, and this one is an absolute blast... The story itself is solid and of good quality. This is much better than some of the writing found in old “Choose Your Own Adventure” type books (I write this with fondness for those books, of course)...   More than anything, it’s a sense of adventure that shines through loud and clear. That’s the most important part of this gamebook: the enthusiasm of the author is contagious. My character may have lost multiple times, but Moon Knight: Age of Anubis is a sure winner!"

And The Cosmic Circus has scored it 8/10:

"I am happy to report that Moon Knight: Age of Anubis was more than a one-hit wonder. I read it through multiple times without repeating many scenes. And even with a couple of repeated scenes, each round felt unique and held my interest. What’s more, I know that I still have plenty of scenes I never even got to. This means that I can read it through several more times (at least) and get different adventures each time... So if you’re looking for some fun and have an hour to spare, pick up Moon Knight: Age of Anubis and save the world with Moon Knight!"

You can order your copy of Moon Knight: Age of Anubis here.

Gamebook Friday - Moon Knight: Age of Anubis

Today's big news is... I've written a Marvel: Multiverse Missions gamebook, as announced on the Aconyte Books website today. Here's the cover blurb.

When N’Kantu, the Living Mummy, escapes his sarcophagus and steals an artifact that turns swaths of mankind into zombies, Moon Knight steps in to save the day… But is hampered by an eager Egyptologist whose choices seem to influence his personalities and strengths. As Moon Knight and the Egyptologist chase N’Kantu from the streets of New York to navigating traps, tricks, and riddles within an ancient temple in Egypt, the two uncover an evil ritual that will begin a battle between gods over the power of life and death. Only the Egyptologist holds the key to unraveling the dark plot… everybody’s lives are in their hands!

The placeholder cover features a picture of Moon Knight battling Ghost in a blizzard.

I was approached to write the third title in the Marvel: Multiverse Missions series last September, having previously supplied technical assistance on the first two books, You Are (Not) Deadpool and She-Hulk Goes to Murderworld.

I was delighted when I was offered multiple super heroes to choose from to be the focus. I subsequently wrote up three different proposals and the one which everyone liked the most, including Marvel, was Moon Knight: Age of Anubis. This makes it the second gamebook I've written inspired by the mythology of Ancient Egypt - the first, of course, was Curse of the Mummy.

The book will be released in the US on 5th September 2023 and in the UK on 23rd November 2023.

Tie-in Tuesday: Deadpool Does Shakespeare

The final part of the All Killer No Filler Deadpool Collection is now out and it is the last to feature additional content by Yours Truly.

I am something of a Shakespeare fan, so, when I was asked to contribute to this issue, I couldn't resist putting in as many of the Bard's own words as possible. Fortunately my editor went with the idea.

As it says in an editorial note on the last page, "In case you were wondering, there's 46 Shakespeare quotes in the feature. Did you spot them all?"

Talking of Deadpool, out soon from Aconyte Books is You Are (Not) Deadpool, and She-Hulk Goes to Murderworld, by Tim Dedopulos. These are the first Marvel Multiverse Missions gamebooks and you will notice I have a credit on the copyright page of each for providing 'techincal assistance'.

You Are (Not) Deadpool and She-Hulk Goes to Murderworld are released in the UK on 29th September 2022.

Gamebook Friday: MARVEL'S MULTIVERSE MISSIONS

Aconyte Books and Marvel have just announced a new range of books that are part game and part story. Sound familiar?

The series is called MULTIVERSE MISSIONS. The first two titles - both written by game designer Tim Dedopulos - are You Are (Not) Deadpool, and She-Hulk Goes to Murderworld.

Inside their packed pages, you will get to assist and advise the superheroes is question, and hopefully succeed in guiding them to a mighty victory.

Both You Are (Not) Deadpool and She-Hulk Goes to Murderworld will be published in September 2022.

Tie-in Tuesday: Avengers take on Dungeons & Dragons

So this is DeviantArtist The Durrrrian's high fantasy take on Earth's Mightiest Heroes. (The Durrrrian's version of the Big Bang Theory gang's pretty cool too.)

Deadlock crossed with Joe Pineapple from 2000AD's ABC Warriors, anyone?

And then there's their arch-nemesis Loki...
