Gamebook Friday: JG to attend Fantasy Festival 2026

This autumn, I will be attending Fantasy Festival in Denmark. The event takes place in Esbjerg over the weekend of Saturday 19th - Sunday 20th September 2026.

Here I am, looming over the other Guests of Honour
like some kind of gamebook ghost.

While I am there I will be interviewed by Danish gamebook author and translator Morten Gottschalck, and I will be involved in a quiz as well.

Danish gamebook author and translator Morten Gottschalck.

Not only that, but one of my gamebooks, which has not yet been translated into Danish yet, will be released on Saturday 19th September 2026 - more on that later. So, over the course of the weekend you will find me signing copies of my books at the Faraos Cigarer stand.

Here I am, in one of the Faraos Cigarer shops in Copenhagen
last October when I visited Denmark for the first time.

If you're in Denmark and visiting Fantasy Festival 2026, do pop by and say hello.

If other gamebook-related news, the Japanese language edition of YOU ARE THE HERO: An Interactive History of Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks is published today by GroupSNE.

Gamebook Friday: L'Oscurità su Arkham

This arrived at my home today...

L'Oscurità su Arkham (published by Vincent Books*) is the Italian language edition of the first Arkham Horror Investigators Gamebook, The Darkness Over Arkham, and a very nice hardback it is too.

It also means that The Darkness Over Arkham is now available in four different languages - English, Spanish, Hungarian, and Italian.

As you can see, L'Oscurità su Arkham varies from the other editions in that is has new cover art. And while the book does not feature any full page illustrations, Vincent Books have commissioned some adventure-specific fillers, including the ones shown below.

Recently, I was interviewed by Riccardo Scaringi for the Il Gioco In Tavolo podcast. During the course of our discussion we talked about Fighting Fantasy as well as exploring the world of Arkham Horror through gamebooks, which you can watch below.

Make sure you pop back tomorrow, because it will be new book day - again!

* Who have also published Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland and The Wicked Wizard of Oz in Italian.

Tie-in Tuesday: Terrible Lizards

Back at the start of the year, I was interviewed by Kenny Smith for The Power of 3 Podcast about my Eleventh Doctor novel Terrible Lizards.

First published in 2012 as part of Monstrous Missions, and later released as a self-contained novel for the US market in 2016, in Terrible Lizards, the Eleventh Doctor and his friends join a group of explorers on a Victorian tramp steamer in the Florida Everglades. The explorers are searching for the Fountain of Youth, but neither they nor the treasure they seek are quite what they seem...

If you are interested in peeking behind the curtain, to find out how a book comes to be, you can listen to the podcast here. And you can order pre-loved copies of the novel here.

Gamebook Friday: JG breaks the Internet!

Okay, apologies for the clickbait-y title. What actually happened was, during the livestream of the actual play of The Tides of Innsmouth on Sunday, the stream starting glitching and Jordan Sorcery had to turn off the video feed. I think the problem was actually a combination of the heat and his beleaguered equipment.

Anyway, if you missed the livestream you can watch it again here...

And then on Wednesday night I took part in a live interview with Mathieu and Mark on Rôliste TV. However, rather lasting for the expected hour, it went on for almost two.

You can watch the interview in its entirety here...

Lastly, I was recently interviewed by Paul Semel about The Tides of Innsmouth. You can read the interview, in which I discuss things like my sources of inspiration and how I go about plotting an adventure gamebook, here.

If you've read The Tides of Innsmouth, and you are able to, please post a review of the adventure on Amazon, to help counter the damage done by people complaining about the quality of their print on demand copies (and which are not rip-offs). Thank you.

Gamebook Friday: Forthcoming Livestreams

For those who might be interested, I will be taking part in a couple of livestreams over the next few days.

On Sunday 15th June at 7:00pm, I will be joining Jordan Sorcery for a live playthrough of The Tides of Innsmouth. You can join the chat here to help decide what our Investigator does as they visit the sleepy seaside town of Innsmouth.

And then on Wednesday 18th June at 7:00pm, I will be chatting to Mathiew and Mark on the French YouTube channel Rôliste TV about my work in the gamebook genre. We will be discussing the history of Fighting Fantasy, adapting classics like Dracula, and my recent forays into the world of Arkham Horror.

Gamebook Friday: JG interviewed on Rand Roll

The title of this blog post says it all really. I was recently interviewed by Duncan Thomson for the Rand Roll website, a blog about RPG tools, solo gaming and random tables. Click this link to read the interview.

If you follow me on social media, or are a regular reader of this blog, you will already know that I will be attending the UK Games Expo from Friday 30th May - Sunday 1st June 2025. Gamebook Friday: Magic Realms - The Art of Fighting Fantasy

Now available from all good book retailers*, is the long awaited Magic Realms: The Art of Fighting Fantasy, by Sir Ian Livingstone and Yours Truly. The official launch party was held at the Barnes Bookshop on 5th September, attended by Sir Ian, while plenty of people picked up a copy last weekend at Fighting Fantasy Fest 5.

I was on BBC Radio Somerset on 5th September, talking about the new book and the Fighting Fantasy series in general. You can listen to the 12 minute interview with Vicki Clark for the next 22 days here. (The bit you want begins at the 2hr 16min mark.)

Vicki Clark of BBC Radio Somerset and Yours Truly.

Sir Ian and I will be signing copies of Magic Realms: The Art of Fighting Fantasy tomorrow, Saturday 14th September 2024, at the Forbidden Planet Megastore in London, from 2:00-3:00pm. So, maybe I'll see you there.

* I am aware that those people who backed the book through Unbound have yet to receive their signed copies and I am very sorry about this. Unfortunately Sir Ian and I have no control over when the rewards are sent out, but we have expressed our disappointment to the publisher.

Gamebook Monday: Jonathan Green meets Jordan Sorcery

I was recently interviewed by Jordan Sorcery about my work for Fighting Fantasy and the Black Library, and the video went live yesterday. And you can watch it here...

It was nice to be given the opportunity to talk about things people don't often ask me out, such as my involvement with Games Workshop and the early days of the Black Library. However, having watched the interview back, I must apologise for the number of times I use the word 'fun' during the course of our conversation.

Jordan Sorcery has been putting out some fantastic content on his YouTube channel and has interviewed the likes of Sir Ian Livingstone, Rick Priestley, Alessio Cavatore, Gav Thorpe and Andy Chambers, to name but a few. You will also find an interactive history of Fighting Fantasy gamebooks on there.

Gamebook Friday: ACE Gamebooks and OnTabletop at the UK Games Expo 2022

A week ago today, I was busy selling out of copies of The Wicked Wizard of Oz and NEVERLAND - Here Be Monsters! while stocks of Dracula - Curse of the Vampire and 'TWAS - The Krampus Night Before Christmas were getting low too. That's right, it was the UK Games Expo 2022!

It was great to catch up with people again after three years, and special thanks must go to my friend Scott who helped look after my stand*, meaning I could actually get a look around and see all** that the Expo had to offer.

Scott - on brand as ever!

Highlights of the weekend included signing a first edition of my first book Spellbreaker, which was published 29 years ago this month, meeting GTG Vicki in person, Olly Mc and John Robertson's playthrough of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, cocktails and Japanese food on the Saturday evening, and being interviewed by OnTabletop at the Thursday press preview, which you can watch here...

* Even though he was actually on his honeymoon!

* Or at least some of.

Gamebook Friday: HEOROT on the UK Games Expo Twitch Channel

This week I was interviewed by Richard Denning - one of the masterminds behind the UK Games Expo - about HEOROT - Role-Playing in the World of Beowulf Beastslayer on Twitch.

Gamebook Friday: Alice's Nightmare in Italy

Next week I was supposed to be attending PLAY: The Games Festival, held in the Italian city of Modena. The Italian language version of Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland was due to launch at the event, and I was going to be signing copies of the book.

As things stand, PLAY has been postponed until the end of May, but I really can't say for certain at this time whether (a) the event will still go ahead, or (b) whether I'll be there.

However, in anticipation of the launch of L'Incubo di Alice nel Paese Delle Meraviglie, I was interviewed for Librograme's Land Magazine. You can read the interview, if you can read Italian, here.

I was also supposed to be giving a talk to The Lewis Carroll Society in London this evening, but, unsurprisingly, it has been cancelled.

In other gamebook-related news, Dracula - Curse of the Vampire now has just four days left to run on Kickstarter and has already passed Stretch Goal #1. Can we reach Stretch Goal #2 before Tuesday lunchtime? If everyone keeps spreading the word, I am sure we can!

I must have been subconsciously influenced by the Coronavirus Pandemic, as there are four places in the adventure where you can pick up infectious diseases!

Short Story Saturday: Tales from Wonderland and the Red Planet

Wonderland, the Alice in Wonderland-inspired anthology, has been been undertaking an epic blog tour of late, which has resulted in all sorts of positive comments. But the one which stood out for me was the one that appeared on Set the Tape, and that mentioned my own story, The Hunting of he Jabberwock.

Meanwhile, the latest issue of the Judge Dredd Megazine (#412), features a piece by Stephen Jewell about the Scarlet Traces anthology, which mentions my own story, Wonderful Things, and even includes a soundbite from Yours Truly*.

Wonderland: An Anthology , published by Titan Books, and Scarlet Traces: A War of the Worlds Anthology, published by Abaddon Books, are both available to buy now.

* Although I'm not keen on the rather pejorative use of the word 'claims' in that part of the article.

Gamebook Friday: JG on Gamebooks

For those of you who may be interest, I was interviewed recently for Phantasmagoria Magazine, about Fighting Fantasy and my other gamebooks. You can pick up a copy of the magazine here.

If was also interviewed a while ago for a Bulgarian gamebook site, Legacy of Kreya. You can read an English translation of the interview here.

Gamebook Friday: Gamebook Goals

As it's a New Year*, I thought it timely to review my gamebook goals for the year ahead.

First of all, I intend to continue to grow and develop my ACE Gamebooks series. With that goal in mind, I have launched a Kickstarter to fund production of the fifth title in the series, 'TWAS - The Krampus Night Before Christmas. As of writing, the Kickstarter is already 54% funded after three days, and there are four play-testers slots still available.

I'm also busy giving NEVERLAND - Here Be Monsters! a final proofread, and editing Beowulf Beastslayer. There are more foreign language editions of Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland in the works, and at least one foreign language edition of The Wicked Wizard of Oz on the way. I have more ACE Gamebooks planned after 'TWAS, but one gamebook project** at a time is quite enough.

I now have eight hardbacks of YOU ARE THE HERO Part 2 left to sell, two having been snapped up already, so if you didn't get one for Christmas, or you have some Christmas money burning a hole in your pocket, you know what to do.

I received a lovely Christmas box from my German publisher Mantikore-Verlag, containing chocolates, cakes, apple gin, Alice in Düsterland prosecco, and a signed gamebook by superstar German author Jens Schumacher, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the Frankfurt Book Fair last year.

Of course, the one piece of interactive fiction that everyone is talking about at the moment is Charlie Brooker's Bandersnatch, but I'm afraid I can't comment on it as I haven't seen it yet. Too busy writing my own gamebooks, you see?

And before I forget, you can read an interview with me here, at the Legacy of Kreya.

* 2019 already?!?

** Or rather three!
