Warhammer Wednesday: Herald of Oblivion is back on Steam!

A new Warhammer Classics event has kicked off on Steam and one of the games available as part of this franchise sale is Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion, Tin Man Games' adaptation of my Warhammer 40,000 Path to Victory gamebook*.

As the news piece on Warhammer-Community.com puts it, "The Warhammer Classics celebration invites nostalgic fans to revisit formative experiences, while opening the door for a new generation to discover the games that helped shape Warhammer’s enduring presence in PC gaming."

Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion - a vast, choice-based digital gamebook set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe in which you are a Space Marine - was Tin Man Games' first foray into the worlds of Warhammer, and was supposed to be the first in a trilogy of digital gamebooks.

YOU are a veteran Space Marine of the Imperial Fists Chapter. Equipped with powerful Terminator armour and armed with the deadliest weapons that the Adeptus Astartes wield, you are a symbol of the Emperor's might. Trapped aboard the space hulk Herald of Oblivion, and the only survivor of your squad, you must fight your way through the aliens and heretics that infest the star vessel and find a way to escape the horror and return to your Chapter.

Warhammer Wednesday: Best Black Library sales

Today I received my latest royalty statement from Games Workshop. It may be a while since I last wrote for Black Library but I still get a few pounds and pence in royalties each year from sales of my novels and short stories, thanks to the prevalence of eBooks.

I thought it might be interesting to share the best-selling titles, based on earnings. So, here we go...

Warhammer Wednesday: Warhammer eBooks

Monday saw the release of Krakenbane's Curse, a new Age of Sigmar short story by Yours Truly.

Lion El’Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels

Ideally this would have been posted on Warhammer Wednesday, but the news only dropped five hours ago (as of writing). If you've not seen the reveal from Games Workshop yet, the big new - HUGE news, in fact - is that the Lion has returned!

Why do I mention this on my blog? Because it was I, under the guidance of game design legend Jervis Johnson, who wrote the Dark Angels background for the original Codex: Angels of Death, the last paragraph of which revealed that the body of Lion El'Jonson was hidden deep with the Rock, the Dark Angels' base of operations and all that was left of their devastated homeworld Caliban. So to see the Primarch enter Warhammer 40,000 some 27 years later is really quite cool.

Warhammer Wednesday: The Emperor's Champion

This Saturday, 8th October 2022, is Warhammer Day, and is focused on celebrating 35 years of the tabletop miniatures game Warhammer 40,000.

To mark this occasion, Games Workshop is releasing a new Emperor's Champion miniature/diorama. Although it's entitled Bayard’s Revenge, the model of an Emperor’s Champion triumphing over a mighty Ork Nob, reminded by of my Warhammer 40K novel Crusade for Armageddon, which just happens to features an Emperor's Champion of the Black Templars Chapter triumphing over multiple Ork Nobs.

Although Crusade for Armageddon is no longer in print, and not available as an eBook either, my popular short story The Relic, that features many of the same characters from that particular novel, is available in both Legends of the Space Marines and War for Armageddon: The Omnibus.

Warhammer Wednesday: The Solemnus Crusade

Black Templar Space Marines appear to be popular at the moment, what with the release of Marc Collins' new novel about High Marshal Helbrecht*. So, today seems like the perfect time to remind you that I have written a few stories about the Black Templars Chapter myself.

In reading order they are: 

Sanctuary - a short story which first appeared Issue #38 of Inferno! magazine.

Crusade for Armageddon - the first in a planned trilogy, that follows the brothers of the Solemnus Crusade as they seek revenge against an Ork Warboss on the war-torn planet of Armageddon. It also features Steel Legionnaries and the crew of a Titan.

Conquest of Armageddon - espionage, timey-whimey shennanigans, Chaos Marines, more Orks, and a Kroot. What more could you ask for, excepte perhaps for the trilogy to have been finished?

The Relic - set after the events of the two novels. As it says on the Black Library website, "Dreadnought Brother Jarold leads warriors from the Black Templars Chapter in battle against the greenskins in the frozen Dead Lands. Following a distress beacon, they find another Dreadnought in the ice, buried for half a century. When the orks attack en masse, the two Dreadnoughts make a last stand against the bestial invaders."

The Armageddon Ominbus - my Black Templars stories were combined into this short-lived print-on-demand title, which now goes for upwards of £90 on eBay. Shame I've only got the one copy myself.

War for Armageddon: The Omnibus - The Relic is also available in this new omnibus that features of work of various other BL authors as well, with stories all set during the Third War for Armageddon.

Warhammer Wednesday: Tales from the Grim Darkness of the Far Future

Warhammer Wednesday: Heroes of Pariah

With the news from Games Workshop being all about New Warhammer 40K lately, this Warhammer Wednesday I would like to draw your attention to Tin Man Games' adaptation of my Path to Victory gamebook Herald of Oblivion.

Warhammer Wednesday: #New40K

In case you haven't heard already, the big announcement from Games Workshop at the weekend was that a new edition* of Warhammer 40,000 is on the way. The news broke with this rather wonderful cinematic trailer.

What I personally found quite exciting about this is that the Necrons** are front and centre, which gives me the perfect excuse to plug two of my short stories that are available as digital downloads from the Black Library, seeing as how they both feature the ancient Necrontyr.

On an artificial world far from the light of any son, three sorcerers of the Thousand Sons emerge from a portal, Together, this trio will face ancient horrors – but the prize that awaits them is worth any danger, Long have these three sought the Godstar, piecing together its location from scattered scraps of knowledge. The immortal guardians of the place sleep, but it is not undefended, and the children of Prospero will pay a heavy price for that which they seek as they delve deep into the ancient mysteries of the necrons.

Investigating a distress signal from an ice-shrouded mining colony, Space Marines of the Imperial Fists find themselves outnumbered and surrounded by the soulless necrons. Facing impossible odds, the Imperial Fists struggle desperately to find a way to survive.

Short Story Saturday: In the grim darkness of the future there are only eBooks

I was slightly surprised to open an email from Games Workshop yesterday to discover, under the Black Library banner, the cover of my second Warhammer novel Magestorm staring back at me. It's a story from the World-That-Was and it was first published 16 years ago, in 2004.

As it turned out, the reason for the appearance of this title is that in this time of lockdown, like many publishers, Black Library are promoting their digital products, and Magestorm is one of the eBooks you can download direct from www.BlackLibrary.com. There are several short stories of mine also available as eBook downloads, including two that feature the ancient alien Necrons; my most recent Warhammer 40K story Journey of the Magi, and But Dust in the Wind, first published in 2010.

Warhammer Wednesday: The Return of Crusade for Armageddon?

For the last two years, the Black Library Celebration has included the re-release of much-requested books, and 2020 will continue this grand tradition. The choice of which books receive this accolade is down to a reader vote. And unbelievably, this year, one of the contenders is my very own Crusade for Armageddon, originally published in 20003.

Of course, the book's not going to win, not when it's up against the likes of Graham McNeill's Nightbringer, Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Helsreach, and James Swallow's Faith & Fire, and it won't help that many newer Black Library readers won't even have heard of me before. But it's nice to be on the shortlist of six Warhammer 40K novels.

Warhammer Wednesday: Apocalyptic Battles in the 41st Millennium!

Apocalypse is what it's all about in the Warhammer 40,000 universe at the moment, and some of the books the Black Library has produced, that feature apocalyptic battles, are being given a renewed push as a result.

Obviously, the War for Armageddon omnibus gets a mention, which, although it doesn't contain my two Armageddon novels, does include my Black Templars' story The Relic.

And while we're on the subject of apocalyptic battles, several of those that occur within my novel Iron Hands are definitely on the apocalypse scale, so why not check it out?
